Ava's First Birthday

9.22.10

Happy Birthday to Ava!!!

Wow, we did it! Clark and I made it through Ava's first year and can hardly believe all that we've experienced along the way. It's been a journey, but one we would do again just to have this little girl. We are thankful for her life and the wonderful little person she is becoming. God gave us such a gift!

If I'm honest, I think having Ava's 1st birthday party meant more to Clark and I than it did to her. It was great to spend a few hours with family and friends celebrating, but her cake testing moment was very anti-climatic. With all eyes on her she didn't feel the need to entertain anyone. She sweetly stared back at a room full of people with an expression that resembled the thought, "Why are you looking at me? You've got cake so why don't you eat it?". As she daintily picked at the frosting eventually she began to squish it through her fingers which was followed by a grin. That's as exciting as it got for Ava. The adults laughed, endulged in some cake / ice cream, and created their own entertainment. Later as I thought about that moment I wasn't too surprised by her response. I've began to notice a trend with Ava ... she tends to get stage fright when put on the spot. So, we'll see how that plays out in the years to come. Right now it's somewhat comical. She'd rather people watch ... than entertain. Ummm. Who does that sound like? Clark? Me? Or both of us?

Overall, Clark and I are grateful for the first year and all those who have helped us along the way. The days sometimes seemed long, but friends and family made the weeks go fast. We've appreciated the extra hands, advice, wisdom, prayers, and support as we jumped into parenthood. We wouldn't be where we are today if it weren't for the wonderful community around us ... Thank YOU! Cheers to Ava and to ALL we call our family and friends! We love you!!
